Why did you specifically choose
DFS as an employer?
"I was thrilled to be part of the team responsible for keeping the skies safe."
Tobias Hebgen Dual student of electrical engineering and information technology, air navigation services engineer
The career so far
"After completing my school-leaving exams, everything happened very quickly and I was able to join DFS straight away.
When I completed my school-leaving exams in 2022, I’d already been accepted onto the dual course of studies at the Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences. I was very interested in DFS as they offered me the opportunity to do my degree with a really wide range of options for my practical phases. I applied, took an online test, had a telephone interview and then went to the assessment centre in Langen – and was accepted just one day later."
The motivation
"The technical opportunities offered by DFS during my studies were what ultimately convinced me.
I can immerse myself in many different areas here and, unlike other companies, I don't have to decide or commit myself beforehand; I can try everything out."
The activities
"I can work on leading-edge projects.
My current project is contributing to the transition to new cloud-based solutions. My focus is on hardware for a system to process radar data so that this will continue to run reliably in the future and be available to our air traffic controllers around the clock.
"Even as a student, you can make a really important and meaningful contribution to safety in German airspace and bear responsibility."
The challenges
"My project is new for everyone, which makes everything very exciting."
For me as a student, yet also for my colleagues, our project is breaking new ground. This makes it both exciting and challenging. I have to face up to this and am working hard on developing new solutions. Sometimes steps forward are followed by steps backward, but when you stick at it and achieve something, it's a great feeling. I can also take on work for my colleagues in other departments that they simply don't have time to complete due to their other day-to-day duties. This also gives me a good feeling."
The corporate culture
"The atmosphere here is really informal across the hierarchy, even with us students."
I switch departments depending on the semester and sites where I’m assigned. As a result, I get to know a lot of people and am out and about with different teams, in the control centre and the tower, but also on the airport grounds or at various facilities across Germany. Everyone is very helpful and nice, making sure we can learn new things. I can ask anyone pretty much anything. The first person I meet in the corridor will take the time to help me."
