What makes working at
DFS so exciting for you?

"The sky is like a 3D road network."

Dominik Huhn Flight data specialist at DFS, since 2011

The career so far

"I was practically born into the world of aviation.

My father was an air traffic controller, and his work fascinated me for as long as I can remember. I was in the air force for my compulsory military service straight after school. After that, I was keen to become an air traffic controller, but unfortunately, I didn't pass all the tests. So, I decided to take up a degree in meteorology with the aim of going into aeronautical meteorological forecasting. My father gave me the tip that flight data specialists are always in demand, so I drove to Langen to visit DFS and check out all the options. This reignited my passion, so I decided to take those tests. And passed them all! I then decided to break off my studies and move to Langen, where I did my training at the DFS Academy and finished in 2011. I’ve been with DFS ever since."

The motivation

"Once you get the flying bug, DFS is simply the best place to be.

As a flight data specialist, you work closely with air traffic controllers. The job also offers many other varied tasks. If, like me, you’re passionate about everything to do with aviation, then there’s really no alternative."

The activities

"I coordinate everything – from normal air traffic, through air shows with aerial acrobats, all the way to our trainees.

I work closely with the air traffic controllers. We sit right next to each other, and together, we organise everything that goes on in skies. This ranges from normal air traffic to calculating more efficient flight routes, from military air traffic to great events such as air shows and aerial acrobatics. I also teach the trainees theory when they move from the Academy to the branch, before they start working in real traffic situations. I love seeing how they grow into the job."

"It's important that everyone can rely on my work at all times."

The challenges

"I can't afford to lose concentration
for even a moment.

After all, I control and coordinate all flight plans, flight zones and flight routes. I have to be prepared for the unforeseen at all times, which means remaining vigilant at all times. This obviously also applies to night shifts, where issues such as system failures can be very stressful. I also have other duties, although these are challenges that I really enjoy overcoming. I'm exactly where I always wanted to be."

The corporate culture

"DFS offers me a lot of variety.
And total security.

Our culture is very appreciative and respectful. We all look out for each other, so it's almost like a family business. We have many further training opportunities and receive support in everything we do. Even if skills you need change over the years, we’re always looking for a new, suitable position."
